What is HCG Diet?

Before we can understand HCG diet, let us first take a quick glimpse of what HCG really means. HCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin which is a kind of hormone produced by pregnant women. It is produced by the cells which will become the placenta. After 11 days of conception, HCG is ready to be detected in the blood and in around 12 to 14 days, it is seen in the pregnant woman’s urine. HCG is now used as infertility treatment too, besides it being used in other approved medical treatment.

What is HCG diet?

HCG diet is getting to be very controversial lately. There are people who firmly disagree on using this kind of method. The renowned Dr. Oz said that it still needs further studies although a lot of Doctors disagree on this idea.

How it works? The dieters are only allowed to consume 500 calories a day and then they are going to be given doses of HCG which acts as supplements. It is said that having these daily dose of HGC will ultimately make the dieter lose about 30 lbs in just a month.

The effect of HCG diet is still questionable to some. Some people believe that it is dangerous despite the fact that there are a lot of people now who can testify that this kind of diet is truly effective while others still search for answers in the internet.

If you want to lose 30 to 40 pounds in just a month, HCG diet is the thing for you.  However, it must be understood that the advice of medical practitioner is necessary to avoid confusions and dangers. Hypertensive people must take note that using this diet may increase their blood pressure more.

Constipation, feeling of hunger and nausea are the most common reported side effects.

HCG Diet Protocol

To start the HCG diet, there are protocols need to be followed. This HCG Diet Protocol is designed by Dr. Simeons, himself and can be found in the book “Pounds and Inches.” This is not the complete protocol, rather than a brief summary of the HCG Diet Protocol.

History Taking

A patient is weighed and measured first; its height, age, skeletal and muscular builds. Then it is calculated to its degree of overweight, and from this can be asses the duration of the treatment and the average loss of weight, example 300-400 grams-per injection of HCG.

The Duration of Treatment

Losing from minimum to a maximum of 15 pounds requires 26 days of treatment with 23 daily injections.  After which, the next 3 days they still continue their 500 calorie diet. The patient is now free to eat anything except sugar and starches for the next three weeks. As soon as their target weight is reached, they can now consume 800-100 calories for the rest of the treatment.

Losing more than 15 pounds to the maximum of 34 pounds requires 40 injections. Regardless of the weight loss, the treatment need to be stopped either when the 34 pounds is lost or the 40 injections has been given.

For patients requiring to loss more than 34 pounds, a second course is offered but should be started only after 6 weeks interval.

Menstruation

Exception to the days of injecting is during menstruations. The diet still continues and resumes after the menstruation. For starting, the advisable days before treatment should be 10 days later.

The Diet

This is a summary of the restrictions and allowed food during HCG Diet. The 500 calorie diet is strictly followed.

    • Juice of one lemon is allowed per day.
    • Salt, pepper, garlic, mustard, etc., may be used for seasoning.
    • Oil, butter and dressing are never allowed.
    • Tea, coffee, plain water or mineral water can be taken in any quantity any time.
    • No medicines or cosmetics other than lipstick
    • Only 100 grams of meat and must be weighed raw after removing all the visible fats
    • Fruit and breadstick may be eaten between meals.
    • 2 Liters of fluid should be taken per day.
    • No eggs allowed
    • Cheeses are restricted (except for countries which use skimmed milk for cottage cheese about 100 grams)

Vegetarians

To supply enough protein for the vegetarians, they need to at least supply themselves at least 500 cc of skimmed milk a day.

The HCG Diet Protocol needs to be extremely and strictly followed.

Dr. Simeons HCG Diet

Dr. Simeons’ HCG diet’s overall guide to the program is all encrypted in the book “Pounds & Inches: A New Approach to Obesity.” The book is considered the Bible of HCG diet where he had written after his discovery in the use of HCG for weight loss. If you’re curious about what the books really say, here we give a brief summary of the book.

Obesity as a Disorder and the Three Basic Causes of Obesity

Dr. Simeons opened the book explaining obesity as a disorder. He reiterates that people suffering from disorder tends to gain more fats whether they eat normally, less than normal or too much. And to cure this, a treatment should be done so it will be corrected.

Psychological Aspects as a cause of obesity – a pressured, unhappy, stress individual are deprived of emotional comfort and gratification is more likely to develop obesity.

Compulsive Eating – 2% of people suffers from compulsive eating and that the real issue for overeating is genuine hunger.

Reluctance to Weight Loss – The affection to fat and the fear of losing it because attentions will divert to their figure rather than their intelligence or character as a person.

The Three Kinds of Fat

According to him, there are three kinds of fat, namely structural fat, normal reserve and the entirely abnormal. The structural fat is a packing material which fills gaps between various organs. The normal reserve is the fuel upon the body. And lastly the abnormal fat which he described as, the accumulation of fat, only fat which an overweight patient suffers. Moreover, the abnormal fats are gathered together in what he calls a “fat-bank,” where we can both deposit and withdraw.

The Treatment of Obesity and Nature of Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG)

For treatment for obesity, and weight loss for the same manner, Dr. Simeons’ HCG diet was recommended. The HCG prevents the loss of the structural and normal fat targeting only the abnormal fat to burn for source of constant energy. Burning the abnormal fats in the fat-bank gives you additional supply of 1500 to 5000 calories. Thus, even if Dr. Simeon’s HCG diet restricts from consuming only 500 calorie a day, it will never make you fell hungry. It also accelerated the body’s metabolism and detoxifies the body that applies to both men and women.

However, HCG is no way to be found in male, only on a pregnant woman’s placenta which is extracted from their urine. If we trace back, this is where Dr. Simeons’ got the idea of HCG diet; which pregnant woman has the ability of feeling no hunger while feeding herself and the baby on her womb because of the influence of HCG in their system. In addition, though they might be gaining a lot of weight during pregnancy, they have the ability to drastically lose it after.

Dr. Simeons’ HCG diet book also includes meal plan and technique, as well as its protocol for HCG diet.

HCG Diet Plan

Dr. Simeons first introduced the first HCG diet plan in Pounds and Inches, which consists of different diet phases. Decades after Kevin Trudeau popularized the HCG diet with his own modification of the HCG diet plan in the book “The Weight-Loss Cure "They" Don't Want You to Know About.”

The Kevin Tredeau HCG diet has four phases.

The first phase is the first month of the diet course. During this phase, a colon cleansing of the body is done to ensure the body from accumulated impurities.

The second phase is similar to Dr. Simeons, which the first two days are the consumption of high calorie foods. After, taking a 500 calorie diet each day should be maintained for the next 21-45 days while taking HCG doses.

The third phase is the continued eating of organic food while slowly increasing the calorie diet from 500. Injecting of the HCG is also stopped.

Finally, the fourth phase is the normal phase, where the dieter needs to maintain the weight he/she achieved.

Kevin Trudeau’s HCG diet plan is almost a replica of Dr. Simeon’s original HCG diet. However, as science is working, there are many HCG diet plans which are a modified plan from that of Dr. Simeons,’ offered throughout the internet. While the other plans are a modification, the common difference of the modification is the substitute of HCG drops instead of the original HCG injection.

We have here a popular sample program of a modified HCG diet plan.

The Fat Release System

The Fat Release System is a modified HCG diet plan which sells their program through the tag line: the only HCG diet program that allows you to eat dark chocolate. From the tag line itself, it seems to be indulging. The fat release system follows the Dr. Simeons’ HCG diet by taking HCG hormones to the dieter but not in a way of injecting but through diet drops. FRS also recommends eating dark chocolate combining it to your HCG diet. The program believes dark chocolate is helpful in lowering daily stress and tension and increasing mental alertness and focus. It’s also has only 20 calories per serving.

There are other modified HCG diet plans circulating through the internet, as well as there also different HCG drops available in different brands. We suggest that it is important to choose a diet program that is trusted and FDA approved. It also helps to read testimonials and review of the program to know if the program really works.

HCG Diet Drops

The HCG based dieting plans are now being offered everywhere thru the web. Dr. Simeons original HCG diet protocol introduced administering HCG injections. Now, it seems like a new phase of the HCG diet plan was introduced. Instead of HCG injections, there are circulations of HCG Diet Drops as a substitute of the HCG injection. People had been speculative of which administration to take. Is it to access the original HCG injection as the original HCG diet plan, or through HCG drops which are taken orally three times a day?

So what’s to take? HCG injections or the newly homeopathic sublingual HCG diet drops?

If we compare the two, both administrations actually results the same weight loss. Both methods averages loss is between a pound or two per day. If they demonstrate the same results, why are there two methods? And you must be thinking that there should be at least a few differences between the two.

Dr. Simeons introduced administering HCG injections 50 years ago. Since then, in respect to evolution, science developed. As for development, the HCG diet becomes more convenient and easy to use as HCG is now homeopathic weight loss remedy or “oral drop.” The drops are diluted and are more powerful and also are ready made that it doesn’t require mixing job.

Some HCG diet drops should be taken three times with 30 – 48 drops a day and some dieters find it inconvenient.  But if you think well, HCG is more complicated because you need to inject the HCG to your body daily.  The HCG injection are shot through thigh which some says is really painful, and they feel fatigue and muscle cramps after. The HCG diet drops, however leaves no mark and definitely cause no pain.  There prices also differ as HCG injection costs between US$ 300 to US$ 400 per 100 i.u. while HCG shots are roughly US$ 70 to US$ 100 per 1 oz. In addition to that, you don’t need the presence of a Physician to administer HCG diet drops, which will cause you money for professional fee.

Today, many believed that HCG diet drops is the most effective and easiest way to infuse the hormone in the body. HCG diet drops are normally taken orally under the tongue. The administration then starts breaking calories for energy and faster metabolism, it also improves blood circulation.

Whatever you choose between the injection and the drop, it doesn’t really matter when we talk about weight loss, because both results are proven effective.

HCG Side Effects

There are a lot of diet plans introduced throughout time. As new discoveries for weight loss emerged, we should remember that there are diet plans that won’t work the same as it works for someone. Thus, results vary in every individual.  The HCG diet has been taking the diet word by storm. There are a lot of testimonial which proves the effectiveness of HCG diet. But, we would like to remind you, most of the diet program causes side effects to the dieter. The reason of this mostly because the body is shocked to diet, eating few foods, lower calorie intake, taking prescription drugs and a strenuous exercise program.

If a diet program causes side effects, maybe HCG diet has some of its own too. If we read testimonials of an HCG dieter, we will find out that HCG side effects are actually rare and some only occur if the body reacts negatively with the use of the HCG hormone. Majority of HCG side effects happens only for a few days and are very light. Here we list some of the reported cases of HCG side effects.

Headaches and migraines

The most common side effect of HCG diet is migraine, headaches, nausea, etc. and mostly happens on the first few days of the diet.

Dizziness

Lack of food and calorie intake and a drop blood sugar probably is the main reason for this.

Tiredness and mental fatigue

Tiredness and mental fatigue happens when the fat moves to the bloodstream to be circulated and release form the system, hence the effect of HCG hormone. Just like headaches, this usually happen during the early days or first phase of the program where the metabolism is adjusting.

Mood shift

Mood shift, disoriented, edgy, constant discomfort and depressed happens due to a sudden drop or lack of calorie intake.

Leg cramps

As simple as this, the body is easily dehydrated because of the lack of amount of fat consumed. That is why from the original protocol of HCG diet, it is recommended to drink at least 2 liters of water a day.

For men

Some HCG side effects reported for men are enlargement of the prostate and growth with the outlines from the chest is because of O-estrogen in the HCG hormone. But this is only when true when HCG hormones are injected, thus, after injection the development subsides.

For women

There are issues raised concerning effects of a women’s fertility. But this story might be a myth because for many years, the HCG diet has proven to be effective for women and results no side effects concerning their fertility.

In conclusion, if you were planning to try the HCG diet, consult your physician before starting, during and after the program. It is imperative that you consult a medical professional so you would know that these side effects were just merely adjustments of the body introduced by the diet program.

“I’m not having any success with this product, and I’m following the protocol strictly. The first couple of injections, I lose 2 or 3 pounds, and then it stops. What am I doing wrong?” – Lisa Ann

A much challenged testimonial.

“I am currently on my fourth day of 500 calories with the HCG injections. The first 2 days were so tough, I almost quit every hour…The only reason I haven’t quit as yet is due to the rapid weight loss….  After the 2 days of gorging, I weighed in at 65.4 kgs the Monday morning. Tuesday morning I weighed in at 64.7 kgs. Wednesday I weighed 63.9 kgs….But heck, the weight loss feels good, but I don’t really approve of the instant gratification, don’t know if this is psychologically a good approach in the long run…..” – Charmain
