HCG Diet Protocol

To start the HCG diet, there are protocols need to be followed. This HCG Diet Protocol is designed by Dr. Simeons, himself and can be found in the book “Pounds and Inches.” This is not the complete protocol, rather than a brief summary of the HCG Diet Protocol.

History Taking

A patient is weighed and measured first; its height, age, skeletal and muscular builds. Then it is calculated to its degree of overweight, and from this can be asses the duration of the treatment and the average loss of weight, example 300-400 grams-per injection of HCG.

The Duration of Treatment

Losing from minimum to a maximum of 15 pounds requires 26 days of treatment with 23 daily injections.  After which, the next 3 days they still continue their 500 calorie diet. The patient is now free to eat anything except sugar and starches for the next three weeks. As soon as their target weight is reached, they can now consume 800-100 calories for the rest of the treatment.

Losing more than 15 pounds to the maximum of 34 pounds requires 40 injections. Regardless of the weight loss, the treatment need to be stopped either when the 34 pounds is lost or the 40 injections has been given.

For patients requiring to loss more than 34 pounds, a second course is offered but should be started only after 6 weeks interval.

Menstruation

Exception to the days of injecting is during menstruations. The diet still continues and resumes after the menstruation. For starting, the advisable days before treatment should be 10 days later.

The Diet

This is a summary of the restrictions and allowed food during HCG Diet. The 500 calorie diet is strictly followed.

    • Juice of one lemon is allowed per day.
    • Salt, pepper, garlic, mustard, etc., may be used for seasoning.
    • Oil, butter and dressing are never allowed.
    • Tea, coffee, plain water or mineral water can be taken in any quantity any time.
    • No medicines or cosmetics other than lipstick
    • Only 100 grams of meat and must be weighed raw after removing all the visible fats
    • Fruit and breadstick may be eaten between meals.
    • 2 Liters of fluid should be taken per day.
    • No eggs allowed
    • Cheeses are restricted (except for countries which use skimmed milk for cottage cheese about 100 grams)

Vegetarians

To supply enough protein for the vegetarians, they need to at least supply themselves at least 500 cc of skimmed milk a day.

The HCG Diet Protocol needs to be extremely and strictly followed.

The Showdown Between HCG and Placebos

While the initial study performed and published by Dr. Simeons backed his claims of the hCG diet's effectiveness, subsequent studies have produced the type of results that don't get mentioned on late-night diet-fad infomercials.

Most independent, peer-reviewed studies of the hCG diet have shown no difference in weight loss between subjects on a low-calorie diet who received hCG injections and subjects who received a placebo [source: Conis]. One study even showed that both the placebo group and the hCG group reported major hunger pangs throughout the treatment.

Regardless, once a person stops the hCG diet, he or she will have to adopt a normal and healthy lifestyle, or the weight's just coming back. Proponents of the hCG diet maintain that the purpose of the diet is to break food addictions and abnormal eating behaviors, and that the month or so of treatment allows a person to do so. In this sense, the diet hopes to achieve short-term weight loss with long-term behavioral modification.

Of course, eating well-proportioned meals is much easier when you're injecting stimulants and hunger-suppressing hormones. If you gain weight again, the doctor or clinic -- upon the follow-up visit -- may recommend you start the treatment over again. Therefore, you may just scrap real attempts to change eating habits and sign on to long-term use of chemicals without fixing the real problem: your diet and exercise habits.

A month-long course of hCG injections and crash dieting will likely help you lose weight, but perhaps what you should be asking yourself is whether or not this is the best way to permanently modify your poor eating habits.

In addition to the reliability of a new diet fad popping up to replace the one before it, there's another constant when it comes to dieting: No matter what you do, maintaining a healthy weight depends on eating right and exercising.

WHAT IS HCG?

HCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, a hormone naturally produced by the placenta in pregnant women and almost completely controls the metabolic function through the hypothalamus throughout the pregnancy.  Contrary to popular belief however, the HCG used in the hCG diet protocols is a variation of the hCG form used for fertility treatments, and in a much smaller dose.  All hCG used for medical purposes   is natural, but created in laboratories from sterile cells.  It is NOT extracted from women or animal urine- a common misconception.

Human chorionic gonadotropin interacts with the LHCG receptor and promotes the maintenance of the corpus luteum during the beginning of pregnancy, causing it to secrete the hormone progesterone. Progesterone enriches the uterus with a thick lining of blood vessels and capillaries so that it can sustain the growing fetus. Due to its highly-negative charge, hCG may repel the immune cells of the mother, protecting the fetus during the first trimester. It has also been hypothesized that hCG may be a placental link for the development of local maternal immunotolerance. For example, hCG-treated endometrial cells induce an increase in T cell apoptosis (dissolution of T-cells). These results suggest that hCG may be a link in the development of peritrophoblastic immune tolerance, and may facilitate the trophoblast invasion, which is known to expedite fetal development in the endometrium. It has also been suggested that hCG levels are linked to the severity of morning sickness in pregnant women.

Because of its similarity to LH, hCG can also be used clinically to induce ovulation in the ovaries as well as testosterone production in the testes. As the most abundant biological source is women who are presently pregnant, some organizations collect urine from pregnant women to extract hCG for use in fertility treatment.

Human chorionic gonadotropin also plays a role in cellular differentiation/proliferation and may activate apoptosis.
